Leather remains the best material for making a quality shoe. However, talking about leather in general is far too wide because not all leathers are created equal. Quality, durability, traceability, at Benjie we choose the best materials for children. It comes from traditional family tanneries in Spain, Italy or Portugal.

ALL OUR LEATHERS COME FROM TRADITIONAL ITALIAN, SPANISH OR PORTUGUESE TANNERIES

We buy our own leathers from traditional tanneries in Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Buying in Europe is the guarantee of having chrome-free VI leather in accordance with the regulations.

The level of oxidation of the leather is controlled during the whole process, preventing the appearance of chromium VI, which can be irritant or allergenic.

Again, it's all about quality and control.

ALL IMPORTANT STEPS

Our leathers come exclusively from food industry waste. It is therefore a means of using an existing, non-dedicated resource.

Animal abuse is monitored throughout the chain and strictly follows very restrictive European legislation in this area.

To color the leather, we use natural pigments which are deposited by drip on dyeing threads.

Finally, our tanneries have a wastewater treatment system (mud, plant extracts, mineral residues).

BREATHABLE, INSULATING, RESISTANT AND COMFORTABLE… LEATHER IS THE ONLY MATERIAL THAT OFFERS ALL THESE QUALITIES TOGETHER!

Leather is a natural material and that changes everything.

It is breathable unlike synthetic and thus lets perspiration escape. This condition is essential because children move a lot and usually sweat from the feet.

Good quality leather is much more resistant than cotton and synthetic canvas. It is also insulating and retains heat well in winter while keeping the feet cool in summer.

Finally, it is very soft and very flexible which gives children an incomparable touch comfort.

Attention: for shoes to be really breathable, it is imperative that the lining is also in soft leather which is always the case with Benjie.

WE ARE NOT AFRAID TO TEST NEW MATERIALS…. BUT NONE HAS CONVINCED US UNTIL PRESENT!

At the start of the 2019 school year, we tested a Benjie in pineapple leather. We hold some reservations for the moment for two reasons.

Resistance is still poor. We realize once again that with children, the constraint of resistance is more complex than on a luxurious adult bag ... In addition, we are investigating the supply chain because the devil sometimes hides in the details. In particular, we would like to check the social conditions of production and the sustainability of the chain (if it leads to overexploitation, the good idea will stop being so as happened with palm oil)

So work in progress!
